Strategic Communication / The Arc

Chapter 06 · 12 lessons · 1 hr 40 min

Empathy and Relevance

Relevance begins when the communicator stops asking only what needs to be said and starts investigating what the other side needs in order to decide.

ARC III

Witness and recognition

What makes truth real?

The practical move

What this chapter changes

  1. 01

Audience analysis is not demographic shorthand; it is a hypothesis about priorities, risk, proof, language, and authority.

  2. 02

Attunement means testing the perspective map in conversation rather than treating empathy as private imagination.

  3. 03

Purpose becomes actionable when it is translated into the other side's constraints without being emptied of its own values.

Panel lens

Who sharpens the chapter

Daniel Pink

His public lessons foreground attunement, serving the audience, discussion mapping, and problem-finding.

Stacey Tank

An executive perspective keeps empathy connected to institutional pressures and the decision context.

Faculty lenses are this guide’s synthesis of the public roster and public instructor specialties. The MasterClass overview does not assign every public module to a named instructor.

The Arc test

Witness and recognition: What makes truth real?

Where they align

This is the closest correspondence. The Arc's witness stage says truth becomes real between people; the MasterClass syllabus makes that reciprocity operational through perspective-taking and alignment.

Where the Arc refuses

Empathy used only to secure compliance is surveillance with better manners. Recognition must be allowed to change the recommendation, not merely the phrasing.

The lesson made visible

Other-side map

Write what the audience is responsible for, what failure costs them, what evidence they trust, and what they might know that the proposal does not.

Output: An audience map with one explicit way their perspective could change the proposed action.
