Anatomy of an Emotion

A personal address book meets the science of bodily maps, interoception, and a century-long argument about which comes first.

The body can report before language decides

The three locations are a personal observation, not a universal chart. Their value is temporal: a throat tightens, a face warms, or a chest constricts before the mind finishes choosing a noun. Emotion can enter awareness as sensation first and explanation second.

Seven hundred people coloured where feelings changed the body

In 2014, Lauri Nummenmaa and colleagues asked 701 participants to mark where bodily activity seemed to increase or decrease while they encountered emotion words, stories, films, and facial expressions. The resulting maps were statistically distinguishable across emotions and broadly consistent across Western European and East Asian samples.[1]

Happiness spread across nearly the whole silhouette. Anger emphasized the head, chest, and arms. Anxiety concentrated strongly in the chest. The authors also named an important limitation: the maps are self-reports and can reflect learned concepts about where an emotion is supposed to live, not only raw physiology.

Does the body make the feeling, or answer it?

William James and Carl Lange made bodily change central to emotion: the organism encounters an event, responds, and experiences the sensed response as feeling. Walter Cannon and Philip Bard objected that similar autonomic changes occur across different states, some bodily responses are too slow, and subjective emotion can persist when peripheral feedback is disrupted.[4]

Modern interoceptive accounts make the sequence less linear. The brain predicts, samples, and interprets signals from inside the body while context changes what those signals mean. Body and appraisal operate as a loop rather than a one-way relay.[3]

What the map can say

A location is evidence, not a verdict

A racing heart can accompany fear, excitement, exertion, medication, or illness. Physiology, behaviour, and reported experience do not always move in lockstep.[5] A body map therefore helps ask where an experience becomes noticeable. It cannot diagnose the cause or decide the emotion by itself.

The most honest map has two layers: the group pattern that research can reproduce and the private pattern only a person can report. The overlap is interesting. The mismatch is also data.
