Heidegger argues that most human existence is inauthentic — absorbed in das Man, the 'they-self,' doing what one does. Authentic existence begins when you face your own death as the one possibility no one else can live for you. That confrontation produces resoluteness: choices that are genuinely yours. Arendt studied under Heidegger, absorbed this framework, and then rejected its conclusion. She replaced being-toward-death with natality, and the solitary self with plurality. You cannot understand why Arendt insists on witnesses without understanding the alternative she was refusing.

Kierkegaard's Abraham stands alone before God with a demand that cannot be explained or justified to anyone else. The 'knight of faith' acts on a commitment so private it cannot be made legible in universal terms. This is the vertical objection to Arendt's thesis: meaning can be completed before God, alone, without witnesses. Whether you find that compelling or terrifying depends on whether you think ultimate commitments need an audience. Arendt did not.
